N2  -  The genus Acinetobacter has a long and complex taxonomic history. In this short review we describe the taxonomy of the genus, the procedures for the species identification and epidemiological typing. Particular attention was paid to practical aspects for identification procedures. As regards molecular typing RAPD analysis, rep-PCR fingerprinting, AFLP analysis and MLST were briefly described, and their application fields were also analyzed.
