N2 - Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging pathogen responsible for worldwide outbreaks in different care settings, particularly in the neonatal and adult Intensive Care Units (ICU). Its multi-drug resistance and long-term survival on inanimate surfaces require the strict enforcement of contact precautions, especially the hand hygiene practice, single room isolation and a thorough environmental hygiene. In order to implement effective control measures in all care settings it is necessary to analyse the structure and processes, to evaluate the patient’s complexity and the intensity of care and to draw up a specific guide that takes account of these aspects. In the present paper we analyzed risk factors and specific measures, based on the author’s experience, practice guidelines and literature review, that should be adopted in different care settings such as pediatrics, neonatology, long-term care facilities and adult ICU. We described innovative strategies to control and limit the spread of these pathogens as well.
