N2 - We describe a 7-month outbreak of a Acinetobacter baumannii multidrug resistant infection involving various wards of an Italian hospital and the control measures adopted. A. baumannii was isolated from various biological samples from 22 colonized or infected patients, and was identified and characterized for its antibiotic sensitivity. Typing of A. baumannii was performed by means of the Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) scheme. Investigation of the outbreak involved extensive microbiological sampling of the environment. The Hospital Infections Committee adopted several measures to control the outbreak, including separation of colonized/infected patients into cohorts and application of separate pathways; the use of dedicated materials for patient care; periodic meetings with all nursing and ancillary staff to provide information and training regarding the critical areas identified and operational and technical procedures; intensification of hand hygiene etc. The results of the present study highlight that the prompt application of control measures, the strict adherence to them by all healthcare personnel and the regular staff training are essential to the successful management of an outbreak.
