N2 - . Introduction. Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) are antibiotics multi-resistant organisms that represent a serious public health threat. The transmission of CPE can be effectively countered by systematically applying standard precautions of hygiene and implementing specific control measures (active surveillance to detect carriers and contact precautions). This article aims at describing the implementation of the Emilia-Romagna regional system for surveillance and control of CPE. Methods. The project was coordinated by the Regional health and social agency with the active participation of the Regional health department and of all local health authorities of Emilia-Romagna Region. In July 2011, a document for the surveillance and control of the CPE has been prepared and circulated. The implementation of the recommendations and the results of control measures were monitored over time. Results. The response of the local health authorities was characterized by a collaborative atmosphere. The level of implementation of the recommendations, however, was variable in different hospitals. We have identified general obstacles to implementation of control measures and the criticalities that are specific of few local health authorities. The impact of control measures is positive and has lead to a slowing of the spread of CPE. Nevertheless, the phenomenon showed an initial resurgence in March 2012, caused by an increase of cases in few local health authorities in the Region.Discussion. The general outcome of the intervention one year after its start is satisfactory but, for a further leap in quality is essential improving the implementation of control measures focusing on the observed criticalities.
