N2 - Introduction. Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) are one of the most frequent and severe complications of medical care. The appearance of organisms resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics, called Multi Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs) worsened the scenario. Adoption of measure effective to interrupt the transmission chain reduces the risk of transmission. One of the main ways to control and prevent the spread of these organisms is represented by the adoption of Contact Precautions in addition to standard precautions. However, achieving compliance with these recommendations is often difficult in practice. The literature was reviewed to identify methods effective to promore the implementation of contact precautions in practice. The strategies most considered are: meetings/outreach visits, audit, feedback, reminders and training in small groups. A strategy of mutiple interventions was implemented in an area where it is important to control infections through isolation measures. The work wash developed at the Umberto I Hospital, in the medical department, as they were experiencing difficulty in managing the control of MDRO infections. Objective. To implement some interventions of proven effectiveness in order to increase the compliance to contact isolation measures. Method. Strategies effective to promote the implementation of contact precautions for patients colonized/infected with MDROs include the followings: audit and feedback, facilitators, training sessions and tools (risk assessment forms, operative procedures, reminders). In order to assess the impact of interventions, a pre/post observational study was conducted on adherence to contact precautions in patients colonized/infected with MDROs in the department of medicine, in the period between March and August of 2012. To evaluate the impact of interventions on identified barriers, qualitative research was conducted through a purposeful sample composed of nurses and doctors of such department. Results. There was an increase in the adhesion to the correct positioning of the patient infected/colonized in cohort or with other patients at low risk of acquiring MDROs. The reminders were useful in improving the flow of information on contact precautions and to harmonization of behavior between the department structures.
