N2 - Introduction. The long-term central venous catheters (CVC) are essential in Oncology, facilitating the care management and ensuring the best quality of life of the patients. The placement and management of the catheter, exposes the patient to local and systemic infectious complications. Since 2010, at the ASL Sanluri a multi-disciplinary clinical approach has been carried out for the placement and management of CVC, treatment and prevention of related complications. Methods. Patients with CVCs who show signs and/or symptoms of infection are subjected to microbiological tests. At the first detection of positive test the microbiologist promptly notify the preliminary results to the clinician, who can immediately establish empirical antibiotic therapy, waiting for the final report containing the susceptibility tests. Results. 64 patients with long-term CVC were observed, in a time span of four years (2010-2013). 29 patients (45.3%) had infectious complications, but only in 4 cases (3.25%) the removal of the catheter was required. In 25 patients (39%) with infectious complications a conservative approach with antibiotic lock therapy was successful. In the last year (2013), none of the CVCs has been removed. Conclusions. The knowledge and the sharing of procedures, defined by clinical path together with the active collaboration of various professionals (Microbiologist, Oncologist, Anaesthetist, Nurses, Psychologist, patient and caregivers) has allowed a unified management of the patients, according to good clinical practice that has made substantial shape of the positive results in the last year of the period considered (no removal of CVC).
