N2 - . Introduction. Monitoring antibiotic usage play an important role in antimicrobial stewardship programs. The are few studies assessing antibiotic consumption in the long-term care facilities (LTCFs). This study describe antibiotic consumption for inpatients of LTCFs in NHS Local Health Autority West Vicenza in the period 2011-2013. Methods. Data were collected by 16 LTCFs on the following: antibacterials for the systemic use (J01 class of the WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification) and rifampicin, expressed in number of defined daily dose (DDD) per 1000 patient-days (PD). Results. Mean use of antimicrobial is 82.4 DDD/1000 PD. Penicillins were the most commonly used class (36% of total use), followed by cephalosporins (23%) and fluoroquinolones (21%). The consumption increased again in 2012: antibiotic prescribing peaked in particluarly during the first quarter. Conclusions. The antibiotic use in LTCFs of the NHS Local Health Autority West Vicenza is similar to the data of the literature. The findings of this study call for the development of antimicrobial stewardship.
