N2 - Introduction. The aim of this study is to report on results of several actions undertaken to implement the compliance of healthcare workers in order to strengthen adherence to the rules of hand hygiene in clinical practice and through staff training and to make good use of the available resources. Methods. Identification of the level of knowledge (questionnaire); direct observation of adherence to the protocol; compilation of the WHO Self-Assessment Framework for the years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013; monitoring of the consumption of the alcohol-based handwashing solution; staff training on the use of conceptual maps to facilitate a significant acquisition of knowledge and skills via a process of re-elaboration; a practical test with the utilization of an ultraviolet ray box; evaluation of the level of knowledge over time. Results. The questionnaire was completed by 256 healthcare workers. 782 activities procedures were observed in 2010, 1396 in 2012, 1159 in 2013. The framework score was 190 in 2010, 200 in 2011, 357,5 in 2012 and 380 in 2013. Consumption of the alcohol-based solution was 10.08 liters/1000 hospitalization days in 2012 and 10.02 liters/1000 hospitalization days in 2013. Two training sessions with small groups were conducted, 6 conceptual maps were created, semi structured interviews were performed with the course participants together with their coordinators and colleagues in order to verify the level of acquired knowledge perceived after 4 and 10 months and to explore the level of perception of the active application in the workplace. Conclusions. The results that emerge from the WHO Self-Assessment Framework suggest a change from a predominantly mechanical type of knowledge towards a significantly meaningful comprehension, that, besides retrieving a sense of diligence and responsibility, tends towards a constructive integration of thoughts, feelings and actions in favour of a behavior modification in the desired direction.
