N2 - National guidelines on control and prevention of health-care associated infection (HCAI) are recommended by the European Union Council. In Italy, where the only infection control national guideline available was the one focused on surgical chemoprophylaxis, the Centre for disease prevention and control of the Ministry of Health (CCM) published in 2010 the “Compendium of the main measures for prevention and control of health-care associated infections”. The compendium, which includes evidence-base practices only, has the objective to: identify measures for HCAI prevention and control, based on strong recommendations, focusing on general prevention strategies, common to the different health-care settings; give to the administrators and to the responsible of HCAI control programs an authoritative referral on assistance practices and measures, representing a primary objective of each program; make standards in HCAI infection control available for the evaluation of control programs, at the hospital or unit level.
